Sustainability reporting in Switzerland: what applies, what is coming

6 October 2026

Since the 2023 financial year, Swiss public-interest companies with at least 500 full-time positions and a balance sheet above CHF 20 million or turnover above CHF 40 million have published an annual report on non-financial matters: environment and climate, social and employee matters, human rights and anti-corruption (Art. 964a to 964c of the Code of Obligations). Since 1 January 2024, a Federal Council ordinance has governed the climate section of that report.

The Federal Council is preparing the next step. The draft it opened for consultation on 1 April 2026 follows EU law as simplified by the Omnibus I Directive: it would cover companies with more than 1,000 full-time positions and turnover above CHF 450 million. No date of entry into force has been set.

SMEs are not subject to these obligations. They still feel the effects: their large customers must report on their value chain and ask them for a carbon footprint.
